Vision is our dominant sense. 80% of learning involves vision. So it is vital to ensure that our children entering school are visually ready and competent to learn. Poor vision can result in poor academic performance due to a range of conditions and symptoms. Often due to a child thinking what they see is normal, many cases go undiagnosed and are missed in standard eye tests.
Our school readiness assessments ensure the child's visual skills and abilities are at an age-appropriate level and ready for the higher-order and attention-demanding learning at school.
There is a lot more to the eyes, and vision than just seeing 20/20 or 6/6.
Seeing a 20-meter target means you have good sight but tells you nothing about your vision. On the right, we have simply given a table view of the skills involved in vision and are tested in our consultations. These children's assessments require up to an hour of testing that involves a variety of tests and observations. It is simply not possible to get this information in less than an hour let alone 20 minutes.
I urge parents and teachers to ensure their child has had a behavioural comprehensive assessment done every two years after the preschool assessment if all aspects are at age level and there are no threats to vision. This is to ensure the child has the ability and tools to reach its full potential in whichever stream they choose to excel in.
Involves screening for retained primitive reflexes which can often lead to learning difficulties if not integrated by appropriate age. Learn more about primitive reflexes by clicking the button below.
Eyesight tests are done by many optometrists. However, we go beyond the standard eye test and assess the child's vision because 80% of learning involves vision. Just seeing 20/20 is simply not good enough for a child. Vision is different to sight and involves aspects such as eye movements, vergence testing, accommodation, binocular vision, depth perception to name a few.
Vision tests are more than just eyesight tests that test areas of the visual system that not only involve the eyes but also the information the eyes deliver to the processor in our bodies; The Brain. Difficulties in processing can be effectively identified and managed to improve the performance of the entire visual system.
