Cataracts

What is a cataract?

Cataracts are a common eye condition that affects many people as they age. They occur when the lens inside the eye becomes cloudy, causing the vision to become blurry or dim. Cataracts can develop slowly over time and often go unnoticed until they start to affect your vision.

What causes cataracts?

The most common cause of cataracts is simply getting older. Factors such as smoking, exposure to UV radiation, and certain medical conditions such as diabetes can also cause earlier development. Traumatic cataracts can also develop as a result of an eye injury.

How to avoid cataracts?

There are several things you can do to help prevent cataracts from developing.

  • Protect your eyes from UV radiation by wearing sunglasses and hats when outdoors
  • Avoid smoking
  • Eat a healthy diet rich in antioxidants
  • Managing medical conditions such as diabetes.

What to do if you have cataracts?

If you suspect you may have cataracts, it's important to see an optometrist for an evaluation. A comprehensive eye exam can determine if you have cataracts and to what extent they are affecting your vision. In the early stages, cataracts can often be managed with correctly precribed corrective lenses or by using brighter lighting when greater clarity is required. If your cataracts are more advanced and are significantly impacting your vision, cataract surgery maybe recommend.

What is involved in cataract surgery?

During cataract surgery , the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens implant. Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed surgeries and is considered a safe and effective treatment option for cataracts. The surgery can be done under public department with a waitlist or with a private eye specialist if you have private heath cover.
