Atropine eye drops are a medication that can be used for myopia control. They work by dilating the pupil and temporarily paralyzing the eye's focusing muscle, which reduces the eye's ability to accommodate or change focus. This change in the eye's focusing ability creates a myopic defocus on the retina, similar to the peripheral defocus created by Ortho-k lenses and MiSight contact lenses. This myopic defocus sends a signal to the eye to slow down its growth, which can help to reduce the progression of myopia.
Atropine eye drops are typically prescribed at a very low concentration (0.01%, 0.025%, 0.05%) and are usually instilled in the eye every night before bed. This low concentration is effective in controlling myopia progression whilst minimising side effects. Some common side effects can be pupil dilation, light sensitivity, blurred vision, difficulty focussing at near. However, these side effects are usually temporary and resolve over time as the eye adjusts to the medication.
Clinical studies have shown that atropine eye drops can be highly effective in controlling the progression of myopia in children.
Atropine can be an effective treatment option for myopia control, but requires ongoing monitoring by a therapeutically endorsed optometrist to ensure proper use, efficacy and management of side effects.
It is important to note that while Atropine has been shown to be effective in slowing down the progression of myopia, it is not a cure for myopia and may not stop its progression entirely. Therefore, it is important to have regular eye exams with an optometrist to monitor the progression of myopia and make any necessary adjustments to the treatment plan.
In addition to using these drops, children can also benefit from other measures to help control myopia, such as spending more time outdoors, taking regular breaks when reading or using electronic devices, and practicing good visual hygiene habits, such as holding reading material at a comfortable distance and maintaining good posture.
