Astigmatism is a common refractive error of the eye that results in blurred or distorted vision. It occurs when the cornea or lens of the eye is not evenly curved, causing light rays to be focused unevenly on the retina. As a result, objects at any distance may appear blurry or distorted.
Symptoms of astigmatism include blurry or distorted vision, eyestrain, headaches, halos around lights and difficulty seeing at night. It can also occur alongside other refractive errors such as nearsightedness or farsightedness.
Astigmatism can be diagnosed through a comprehensive eye exam, which may include a visual acuity test, a refraction test, and a keratometry test to measure the curvature of the cornea. Treatment options for astigmatism include corrective lenses such as glasses or soft and hard contact lenses, and in some cases, refractive surgery such as LASIK or PRK.
It is important to see an optometrist if you are experiencing any symptoms of astigmatism.
